Kite Runner
In 2007, Mark Forster produced a movie of Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner. The Kite Runner is about a boy named Amir, who is a gifted storyteller, who learns to stand up for himself and make sacrifices. Amir was born in Kabul, Afghanistan but was raised in America due to the war that happened in Afghanistan. Although, the movie and the book are very similar they still had differences. One difference is the physical characteristics of the characters. Second difference, is the character's life description from the book is different from the movie. Last difference is, how some of the scenes got cut out and was not fully developed.
One difference that the book has from the movie is the physical characteristics of the characters. In the book, Hassan, bestfriend of Amir, was described that he has a harelip, but in the movie he was perfectly fine. Hassan did not have any complications in his face. Another example is Assef, who was the antagonist of the story was described as blonde but in the movie he has dark hair. Plus, Assef was introduced with the brass knuckles he wears but in the movie it does not show that he wears those brass knuckles. And last is, Ali, the servant of Baba was described in the book that he has a complication with his right leg. In the movie, he was able to walk normally with his two legs and it did not seem like he was crippled.
Second difference in the movie is when the movie changes the character's life description from the book. One example is, the scene where Soraya, Amir's wife, tells Amir a secret about her past. In the book it says that Soraya had a breast cancer but in the movie she did not have a breast cancer. The secret that she told Amir was about her running away when she was still young. Also, the scene where Amir graduates from school is different. The book tells us that Amir graduated from high school, but in the movie he graduated from junior college. Also, in the book Baba seemed really sad when they left Afghanistan and he misses it. In the movie though, it shows that he is happier. Additionally, the scene where Assef and Amir got into a fight, the book says that Amir stayed in the hospital for days to recover. It was very different form the movie, the movie shows us that he was able to travel and go back to his wife in America.
Last difference that the book and the movie had is how they cut out some of the scenes and was not fully developed.. One of the scene that was different from the book to the movie is, they described how hard it was to adopt Sohrab because there wasn't any evidence that will prove Sohrab's parents are dead. In the movie, they did not show this part of the book. They only showed the viewers that they were able to take Sohrab to America without any difficulty. In addition, the part where Hassan got raped was explicitly described in the book while in the movie it was only implied. The movie also cuts out the part of the book where Hassan's mother returns to Kabul. Most importantly, the book explains the closeness Amir and Hassan had, but in the movie it was not fully developed they just showed a little part of it.
The movie and the book are very similar to each other even though they had differences in physical appearance of the characters, different character's life descriptions and some of the scenes was not fully developed, both movie and book still had the same theme. In the end, Amir still learns how to stand up for himself and make sacrifices in order to be good again.
